Have you ever met someone that hated drinking water because they found it boring and flavorless?

I have. I don’t think they really understand the purpose of water. It’s supposed to taste…like water.

But because those people do exist, a whole market has risen up to address their specific need to make the elixir of life more interesting: water enhancers.

These tiny squeeze bottles contain concentrated flavor that can be added to water a few droplets at a time, adding both sweetness and bright new colors. Anything to put distance between the consumer and that bland liquid from the faucet.

Getting people to drink more H20 (even if it’s cleverly disguised) should be a good thing – but do the positive health claims made by the companies that produce these water enhancers hold water?

Does drinking enhanced water defeat the purpose of drinking water to begin with?

Let’s dive in and find out.

How Are Flavored Water Drops Used?

You can now easily find a wide selection of brands owned by beverage industry giants hoping to profit off of the growing trend.

Mostly, water enhancers are used by people who would rather drink water than a carbonated beverage or juice product, but still want some flavor. You might keep one of the little bottles tucked away in a drawer in your office, in the glove compartment of your car, or in your kitchen cabinet.

But making these a part of your regular routine as a sort of substitute for regular water is in question.

Parents, athletes, and anyone else who buys these products are susceptible to believing the claims that they are perfectly healthy.

In fact, a shocking number of parents surveyed rated sugary beverages as healthy. When they were asked why they thought so, they said they were influenced by claims appearing on the packaging. Words like “real” and “natural” and the mention of vitamin C and antioxidants played a part.

Because many of these water enhancers are marketed as healthy alternatives to energy drinks, people are using them in place of coffee or other beverages like energy drinks that are proven to be hazardous.

And since they’re 98% water, they’re allegedly better for you in the long run. But wait – what else is going on inside of those little bottles?

What’s Inside Water Enhancers?

MiO Liquid Water Enhancer proudly displays a complete absence of calories, sugar. and carbohydrates. Zero grams across the board. So, if you’re trying not to drink your calories, these flavor droplets sound like a good option.

But, aside from water, a few other ingredients are included.

In a recommended serving size, you’ll be consuming 98% water. But in that other 2 percent, you’re getting:

You’ll also find artificial colors and some B vitamins at around 10% of your daily value of each. It’s the B vitamins that get the most attention in the health claims made by the producers.

But the fact that these water enhancers won’t ruin your diet is cold comfort for some people who question their healthful qualities. They tend to look at a few of those key ingredients.

What is Propylene Glycol?

Propylene glycol has been linked to some scary stuff. Cell mutations as well as skin, liver, and kidney damage can be the result of ingesting high amounts .

A clear and somewhat bitter liquid used to prevent food discoloration over time, propylene glycol is often a source of controversy when it’s included on a list of ingredients.

And while it is the primary substance used in antifreeze. it’s also in a lot of items you probably use every day, like:

  • Shaving cream
  • Fragrances
  • Deodorant
  • Toothpaste
  • Disinfecting gels

But even though it’s already a common substance, it still raises a lot of concerns because of its use in:

Still, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers propylene glycol to be “generally recognized as safe”. The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) has it classified under the “no cancer” designation.

Studies on human consumption of propylene glycol in the 175-200 mg/kg range for 23 days showed no adverse health effects .

People are rightly curious as to why propylene glycol can lead such a double life and still be supposedly harmless. That’s a healthy skepticism if I’ve ever seen one. But, until there’s evidence to the contrary, don’t worry yourself sick over propylene glycol.

What is Sucralose?

Several hundred times sweeter than ordinary sucrose. or table sugar, sucralose can replace sucrose at less than one-thousandth of the concentration.

Much like aspartame. which has yet to be demonstrated to be bad for you, sucralose has come under attack by rumors and claims of its danger to human health. Most of this comes from it being called “unnatural” or “fake”.

But these attacks are pretty obviously rooted in paranoia, not science .

During its initial approval process by the FDA, sucralose was subjected to extensive batteries of both short and long term studies in both animals and humans. None of the studies demonstrated any significant risk to humans when sucralose was consumed in normal amounts.

The only study that has shown negative effects of sucralose was funded by the Sugar Association. published in the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, and was later refuted by another study.

However, if you’re trying to find a way to gain control over sugar cravings, it’s better to go cold turkey than to continue fueling them with artificial sweeteners. Aside from that, sucralose doesn’t set off any red flags.

How Much Should Be Used?

Already, there are dozens of videos posted to YouTube where people – typically teenagers and younger children – are drinking entire bottles, pouring them into small shot glasses and downing them in one swallow.

The serving size for MiO Liquid Water Enhancer is half a teaspoon. That’s the equivalent of a single six ounce cup of coffee. Downing the whole bottle, as is featured in these videos, is the same as drinking 18 cups of coffee.

The fact that people are not educated about the potential danger of doing this is worrisome, yes. However, these are extreme cases. And there are countless products on the market that when consumed in orders of magnitude greater than recommended serving size can pose serious health risks.

If you’re going to use water enhancers, follow the guidelines for serving sizes and how many times a day you should use them. The same concept should also apply to just about every other food or beverage you consume in your daily life.

The Evidence

Unless you’re consuming them in huge amounts, you’re unlikely to get any dangerous doses of chemicals inside them – an obvious fact that applies to a huge range of substances we consume every day.

The health benefits really haven’t been proven either, other than through keeping you hydrated and helping you avoid far worse sugary beverages.

As mentioned earlier, the B vitamins found in these drinks are most often put forward as the reason why they could be considered healthy.

But, while B vitamins are required by the body to process food and turn it into energy, increasing the amount of B vitamins you get on a daily basis is not a way to magically boost your metabolism .

In fact, most people get all the B vitamins they need in their diet. Any excess is excreted by the body.

Guaranteed Healthy Ways of Adding Flavor to Your Water

But if there’s no other way to float your boat, there are ways of flavoring your water that will still deliver that sweetness you desire without all the added questionable chemicals. There are also a few alternatives to water altogether that will still be more healthful than drinking a soda or a dreaded energy drink.

  • Water with lemon juice
  • Water with a cinnamon stick
  • Water with lime juice
  • Water with crushed mint or basil
  • Seltzer with added fruit juice
  • Unsweetened cranberry juice
  • Unsweetened grape juice

You can even get crafty and make flavored ice cubes out of pureed fruit, fruit juice, or coffee and add those to your regular glass of water.

If you can’t get over the propylene glycol, the sucralose, or the issue generally discussed least – the price – try one of these or some other clever means of adding flavor to your water.

If you still want to try the convenient water enhancing squirt bottle method – but want to avoid most of the questionable chemicals – there are some brands which specifically exclude propylene glycol and use stevia as a sweetener instead.

Conclusion

When study after study shows that the ingredients in something are perfectly fine for human consumption, I’m inclined to side with the science. not the emotional reaction a lot of people experience when they see those strange names listed in the ingredients.

And it’s true, there have been times where foods and beverages have been recalled because they had unsafe substances inside of them. That’s because the agencies and scientists meant to ensure the public stays in decent health (apart from what they choose to do to themselves) are doing their jobs.

What I’d mostly like to convey about these water enhancers is that you don’t need them. Water is amazing on its own. Drink more of it!

I think these flavour enhancers are what the industry call ‘value added.’ In other words, it’s easier to charge more money for a coloured water than plain water.

I am not a great water drinker and yet I can recall my sister (years ago) shoving a slice of lime in my glass and my being thrilled with the result.

I’ve tried one of these before and it was pretty gross. I usually just stick to lemon or lime in my water. I’ve bought the fruit infuser water bottles even. Plain water is great – but yeah, sometimes it is great to have some flavor – which is why I throw actual fruit in my water. These flavorings are gross and no better than drinking some other sugary drink. Thank you for pointing out the facts about those flavorings. Have you ever tried any of them? Definitely not worth any of the hype – and the entire grocery aisle is filled with them!

Dade, I typically stay away — I guess they are better for people than sugary sodas, however, I just try to stay away all together.

I agree that the flavors aren’t even that enticing — not sure what the hype is all about.

Aside from lemon or lime, I am looking for a fruit flavor to drop in my 16.9oz bottles of water.
I have a high sense of taste and can detect artificial sweeteners every time. In addition to the bad taste, I have become a bit light-headed when ANY artificial sweetener is present. Please help! I know it is imperative I drink a lot of water with my advancing age!

KAY, I would recommend that water is amazing on its own. But if you still want to use these flavor drops, use in safe amounts. You can even get crafty and make flavored ice cubes out of pureed fruit, fruit juice, or coffee and add those to your regular glass of water.

Just trying this new Nesfruta, Raspberry flavor (They advertise it as Canada’s first enhancer made with fruit juice, while containing no benefits). 1 Teaspoon for 500ml honestly doesn’t sound too bad, tastes a bit fruity but in the end it’s water. I would drink 8 cups of water a day, with 4 of those cups being enhanced. That means 1 bottle would last about a week. I think it’s disgusting watching people chug these at once. I think water infusers are a waste of money, why put your fruit in the water? Just eat it…

Naturally Flavored Sparkling Water Fruit & Herb Flavored Sparkling Water

  • CHOOSE FROM:

To flavor a glass of sparkling water with fresh fruit and herbs:

Do you like your water fizzy or flat? I like it both ways, but since we bought a SodaStream machine for making carbonated water at home I've come to love fizzy water more and more. There's something about those bubbles that makes it more refreshing to me. King-Man and I most often drink our fizzy water plain over ice, but I also like to add a little flavor or sweetness to mine sometimes. At last, I have a healthy way to do just that. In today's post, I show you how to use natural ingredients to add fruity flavors to sparkling waters.

I gave up soda awhile ago, so I didn't need the carbonated water to help me get over a soda addiction. But, if you're hooked on soda and would like to wean yourself off of it, this post just might help you. Sparkling waters are a healthful alternative to sugary sodas.

Carbonated water is just as good for you as plain water. You may have heard and read about a variety of health concerns about carbonated waters that are floating around the internet--claims that it leeches calcium from your bones, erodes enamel on your teeth, and even causes cancer. I find it difficult to navigate all of the conflicting information I read. So, I was happy to find a reputable source, Scientific American (their Nutrition Diva is a diet and nutrition myth buster) that concludes carbonated water is every bit as good for you as flat water. None of the scary claims about it have science backing them up. Yay. So, if you prefer your water fizzy, then go ahead and drink it that way. The important thing is to drink water--it's important for your health in whatever form you like it.

Carbonated water may have some additional health benefits, in fact, like soothing upset stomachs and heart burn, and giving you a fuller feeling (so you eat less).

Kinds of fizzy water. You can carbonate your own water at home with A SodaStream machine (explained below), or purchase bottles of fizzy waters. Most of them are similar and all fall under the banner of "Sparkling Waters." There are sparkling waters that come from the ground naturally bubbly. Perrier and Pellegrino are two popular (albeit expensive) brands; their sparkling mineral waters come from specific locations in France and Spain. They naturally contain gas that produces bubbles. Seltzer water is widely available in stores and is plain water that has gas bubbles added to it. Club Soda is similar to seltzer but is high in sodium, so I choose to stay away from that for frequent drinking. Tonic has both sweeteners and bitter flavors added to it.

(Just so you know, I have no affiliation whatsoever with SodaStream. I simply use and like their product.)
In case you're not familiar with this popular gadget, I'll give you a brief run down. There are several models of SodaStreams available with prices ranging from $80-ish dollars to $180-ish dollars (June 2013 pricing). I've seen good prices at Bed, Bath & Beyond, Walmart, and Amazon. SodaStreams are really easy to operate and require no electricity or battery. It literally takes seconds to carbonate a bottle of water. There is a gas canister that has to be replaced periodically; one canister lasts for the equivalent of 150 cans of soda. Old emptied canisters can be traded in for full replacements at half the price. I swap mine at a local Bed, Bath and Beyond. Here's what I like about my SodaStream.

  • Convenience. This is huge for me. We can make a fresh bottle of carbonated water whenever we like. No bottles to buy or haul home.
  • Environmentally sound. Sparkling waters purchased in single use bottles contribute to land fills big time. Even if you recycle your bottles, it takes energy and resources to recycle them. Unless you're fortunate enough to live near a natural source of sparkling water (like France or Spain), there is considerable energy consumed in exporting and shipping the bottled waters. All of that is avoidable when using a SodaStream.
  • Healthy. This is true for me because I tend to drink more water when I have easy access to the fizzy kind. Drinking water is good for me, drinking more of it is even better. If you are replacing sugary sodas with this fizzy water, it's a huge health leap.
  • Economical? Truthfully, I'm not so sure about this one. It depends on the price of the model you get and how much water or soda you are replacing that you would normally purchase in bottles. I haven't done the math. I do know that it would take a while for a SodaStream to pay for itself. If you Google it, you can find others who have taken the time to do the math. Some have found SodaStreams to save money and some haven't.

How my SodaStream works. I purchased the "cream of the crop" model that uses glass bottles. I generally prefer glass over plastic, but also like that these are dishwasher safe and look attractive on the table for serving. However, the more economical machines that use BPA-free plastic bottles, work well, too. Here's how mine works (pictured below)

  • Fill the bottles with regular water (filtered, if you prefer) and chill in the fridge.
  • Open the Sodastream and insert a bottle of chilled water; close and slide the lever to lock it.
  • Hit the button on the top until it makes a noise; mine usually takes 3-4 pumps.
  • That's it! Remove the bottle, pour, and enjoy your fizzy water.

  • The water will keep it's fizz for 2-3 days (maybe up to a week), if you are careful to screw on the cap tightly and refrigerate it.
  • You can only carbonate plain water--you can't add carbonation directly to flavored waters. That's because there's a chance that the water will rise up into the SodaStream mechanism when you're adding the gas; if the water contains other ingredients, there's no way to clean them out. So, any flavors have to be added after the carbonation.
  • SodaStreams makes a wide range of syrups that can be added to the carbonated water; many of them mimic popular soda flavors. I prefer to make my own syrups so that I can use healthy ingredients.

2 Methods for Adding Natural Flavors to Sparkling Waters

Method #1.Make Fruit & Herb Honey Syrups. These contain nothing but fruit, herbs, and honey. They add both flavor and sweetness to sparkling waters. Use a little or a lot. however you like it. Recipes and step-by-step photos for these syrups are detailed in my previous post:

Here's how to use these syrups to make your own flavored sparkling water by the glass. I'm using a blueberry sage syrup in the photos below.

  • fill a glass with ice, pour in sparkling water almost to the top, add 1 or more tablespoons of flavored syrup (to taste), stir, and enjoy!

Here's how to use to use the syrups to flavor a whole bottle of sparkling water. I'm using strawberry basil syrup in the photos below.

  • Start with a chilled bottle of sparkling water (buy it or make it with a SodaStream)
  • Add syrup--start with 4 tablespoons per bottle, and add more if needed.
  • Cap the bottle and rock it gently from side to side until completely mixed.
  • Pour and enjoy! The bottle may be capped and refrigerated for at least 2-3 days.

You can make any of my 8 syrup recipes or create new flavors of your own and enjoy an endless variety of flavored sparkling waters. Here they are using my 8 syrups. Every one is so uniquely refreshing.

Method #2: Use fresh fruit and/or herbs with no additional sweetener. If you prefer to stay completely away from sweetened water, this method is easy and tasty. There are endless fruit/herb combinations--use whatever suits you. I'm using a combination of raspberries and orange slices in the pictures below.

  • Muddle fruit and/or herbs in the bottom of a glass, add ice, then pour in sparkling water to the top. Stir gently and enjoy.
  • Unlike the syrups that completely dissolve into the liquid, this method results in bits of fruit floating around in the sparkling water. If that bothers you, an alternative is to add a small amount of 100% fruit juice to the sparkling water instead of fruit.

Me? I use both methods for flavoring my sparkling water. The "no sweetener" method with muddled fruit & herbs is great for more frequent drinking, since it is 100% good for me.

I also love using the syrups when I'm in the mood for a hint of sweetness in my water. Even with the honey in these syrups, the flavored sparkling waters are very low in calories; mine usually are around 30-40 calories per glass. That's a small fraction of the calories in a typical soft drink.

To flavor a glass of sparkling water with fresh fruit and herbs:
--add desired combination of fruit and/or herbs to bottom of drinking glass; press and twist with muddler or handle of wooden spoon to release flavor. Add ice, then pour in sparkling water to the top. Stir gently to combine flavors.
--possible fruit/herb combinations include raspberry & lime, pineapple & mint, watermelon & rosemary, blackberry & sage, ginger & lemon, strawberry & basil

To flavor a glass of sparkling water with Fruit & Herb Honey Syrups:
--fill a drinking glass with ice, pour in sparkling water almost to the top, add 1 or more tablespoons of flavored syrup (to taste), stir to combine flavors.

To flavor a whole bottle of sparkling water with Fruit & Herb Honey Syrups:
--to a chilled bottle of sparkling water, add flavored honey syrup; start with 4 tablespoons per bottle, taste, and add more if needed. Cap the bottle and rock it gently from side to side until completely mixed. Cap and store in refrigerator.
