Sometimes you want to take a course just for the sheer joy of learning something new. But sometimes you need to complete a course for a better job, a promotion, or a college application.
A verified certificate from edX can provide proof for an employer, school, or other institution that you have successfully completed an online course. Verified certificates require you to verify your identity using a webcam and a government-issued ID, so employers and schools know that you completed the course work. What's In It For You?

Choose the course that's right for you
At edX, we have many types of courses to choose from. Choose the one that's right for you. Our courses are rigorous so choose wisely. Some courses allow you to earn a certificate of achievement that is verified to ensure you are the one taking the course.
Upload identifying photos
Using a webcam, you'll take photos of yourself and your government-issued photo ID. Our software will evaluate your photos and verify that you're the person completing the course. When you pass the course, you'll receive a verified certificate that provides a level of comfort to those who may want assurance about the authenticity of your edX course work.
Study hard and pass the course
EdX is known for its high-quality, rigorous courses. To qualify for your verified certificate, you'll need to watch course videos, participate in the discussion forums, and complete homework and exams with a passing grade. If you don't pass, you can take the course again at a later time.
Congratulations—you’ve passed the course!
When you pass your course, you'll receive a certificate that includes an "edX verified" stamp showing that you and you alone took and passed the course. Share your certificate with friends, employers and others through an easy-to-share link we provide. There's a minimum fee, but.
As a not-for-profit, edX uses your contribution to support our mission to provide quality education to everyone around the world, and to improve learning through research. While we have established a minimum fee, many learners contribute more than the minimum to help support our mission. The funds go towards class creation and improving edX. Financial assistance is available for those in need. See Financial Assistance FAQ for more details.Find a Course
Browse our current offerings and find a verified certificate course to take.Common questions About verified certificates What types of certificates does edX offer?
EdX offers two types of certificate. Note that not all courses offer certificates, and that archived courses do not offer certificates.
You can also audit any edX course. You do not receive a certificate if you audit a course, but you can print your progress page for the course if you want evidence of your achievement.
In the past, edX also offered honor code certificates. These certificates are no longer available for new courses. If you earned an honor code certificate in a previous course, you still have access to your certificate through your dashboard. What is an honor code certificate?
Honor code certificates indicate that you earned a passing grade in a course, but did not complete extra steps such as verifying your identity.
Many new courses do not offer honor code certificates. To find out if a course offers honor code certificates, see the About page for the course. If you're enrolled in the course, you can also find this information on your edX dashboard .
If you earned an honor code certificate in a previous course, you still have access to your certificate through your dashboard. What is a verified certificate?
A verified certificate is a certificate that requires learners to verify their identities using a webcam and a government-issued photo ID. Verified certificates carry a fee that varies by course. Many learners use verified certificates for job and school applications.
For more information about certificates, see Certificates in the edX Learner’s Guide. What is an Xseries certificate?
An XSeries certificate shows that a learner has earned a passing grade in all of the courses that make up an XSeries. An XSeries is a series of 4–10 courses in a specific subject. The institution that offers the XSeries determines the courses that make up that XSeries.
For example, MITx offers an aerodynamics XSeries certificate. To earn this certificate, you must earn a passing grade in two courses: 16.101x Introduction to Aerodynamics and 16.110x Flight Vehicle Aerodynamics. Why should I sign up for a verified certificate?
If you plan to use your course for job applications, promotions, or school applications, you may prefer to have a certificate that is verifiable. It’s also a great way to give yourself an incentive to complete the course and celebrate your success.
The funds collected from verified certificates go toward class creation and improving edX. So while there is a minimum fee for a course, you can help support edX and other learners by choosing to pay more for the course.
Note – while a small number of verified certificates are offered today, we plan to increase the offerings over time. How does verification work?
When you register for a course that offers a verified certificate option you will be asked to submit your photo and a photo of an official ID through the use of a webcam. As your course progresses, you may be asked to re-verify your identity. It’s as simple as that.I am not interested in a certificate. Can I still audit a course?
Yes. All edX courses can be audited for free. If you audit a course and pass, you will not receive a certificate, but you can participate in any or all activities and exams. Want proof of participation? Simply print your progress chart (located inside each course you take). What is an archived course?
Many of edX’s past courses are available as archives. These courses can only be audited and some features, such as the discussion forums, may not be available. No certificates are available for archived courses. Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
Yes, you have up to two weeks from the course start date and time to upgrade or downgrade your selected choice. You can get a full refund up until then. After that, we can no longer provide a refund.
Want a refund or have issues with billing? Contact us at email@example.com. Please include the email address with which you registered in all refund requests. Please do not include your credit card information.edX Courses are Always Free to Audit
