MIT Sloan - Critical Square MBA Admissions Consulting

School Profile | MIT Sloan School of Management MIT is known for its engineering prowess and they apply the same level of rigor towards management. This school profile is best read with a cup of coffee!

Taking its analytical direction and prowess from its parent institution, Sloan has carved out a niche all its own. They are as known for Entrepreneurship as they are for Finance. Innovation and invention run rampant in its halls and they know no bounds. Sloan has thought leaders in almost every management field out there and if you’re the MIT kinda student – you’re going to love it! But it’s not for everyone and fit at Sloan is a very real criteria for its admissions directors. So much so, actually, that almost all interviews are conducted by admissions directors and a panel of faculty and others make the final decision.

Did you catch the key words? “Innovative” and “leader” – make sure you highlight those in your applications. If it is your kind of place, then you’re going to learn by doing. At almost no other top MBA program is this in play as much as it is at Sloan. From action labs to international learning opportunities, students have no shortage of opportunities to get their hands dirty.

Considering applying to MIT Sloan? Geography & Weather From Energy to MIT Sloan

I had a 760 on my GMAT, a CGPA of 8.7, and 4 years of experience with fortune 500 companies in the energy space. I felt I had a strong profile for an admission into a top 10 b-school, and therefore my initial motivation in looking for an MBA consultant was to ensure I gave myself the best shot at my target schools – especially as I managed a high pressure job with 65+ hour work weeks and with constant travel. So I reached out to close to 10 consultants by signing up for their free on-call consultation, and also posted a brief of my profile online on Gmatclub for a review of my application.

Critical Square impressed me on both fronts. Their response on Gmatclub was by far the most logically structured among all other consultants that replied. Then, during the on-call free consultation, we ended up brainstorming way past the scheduled 30 minutes, and they offered genuine and critical feedback on aspects of my application that I had not thought of before. I eventually chose Critical Square because I felt that they were the most passionate of all the firms I spoke to, and because I was convinced that they would be able to genuinely challenge me to get the best out of my applications. So I signed up for their 3-school strategic package.

My primary concerns through my application process were to differentiate myself from within the pool of male-Indian-engineers, and to articulate my MBA story given my experience with a niche sector (energy sector, not traditionally a feeder into b-schools). I was very impressed with Critical Square in that not only did my Client Manager understand my background (he actually knew more about the Indian political scene at the time than me!), but he also took the pains to research on the energy sector and my best options post school. Right through the initial story-boarding to developing the resume, I felt I was working with a partner who was equally serious about my application as I was and whose inputs I could completely trust.

The work my Client Manager did through the process was phenomenal, and their support through my essays was the best of it. I remember sending in the first draft of my essay for review, and it coming back promptly within a day, critically shredded, almost torn to pieces with the comments. There was sound logic behind each of the feedback points, and more importantly, my client manager was willing to argue with me on the same instead of forcing his views. I knew right then that I had made the right choice in enlisting with their services – the process repeated through every essay review – and I literally saw my essays bloom after each iteration. Looking back, it was also my favorite aspect of our interactions – I always got comments back on my essay drafts in a timely manner, and my client manager was forever available on Skype whenever I wanted to discuss on specific suggestion points. I remember one essay which gave me the most trouble through the process, and my client manager agreed to get on a call to specifically discuss the story boarding for this without any mention of extra charge whatsoever! I also remember reaching out to my client manager with simple queries on the application process – and he was again very happy to help always.

I applied to MIT Sloan, UC Berkeley Haas and Duke Fuqua with Critical Square – I received invitations to interview at all 3, got admit calls from Sloan and Fuqua, and was waitlisted at Haas (which I declined as I had decided on Sloan by the time). It was almost the perfect result, and the perfect testament to the service provided by Critical Square. I was so happy with the results, that I did not even choose to apply to more schools in Round 2. I think that if I had applied, I would have used their services again, as it really did make all the difference!

I strongly recommend Critical Square to everyone who is serious about their MBA applications, and is looking for a consultant who would not be shy of giving direct, critical feedback and push for getting the best out of your application. Personally, I already have my sister and my housemate signed up into their services in advance!

Sep 17, 2015 Jan 14, 2016 Apr 11, 2016 Class Profile About the Program What They're Known For

MIT Sloan is out “to develop principled innovative leaders who improve the world and to generate ideas that advancement management practice.” That’s a mouthful but it has a lot of great information in it. Sloan values Innovation, Leadership, Personal Achievement, and Entrepreneurship. In this context, we’re not talking about starting companies necessarily (although that’s cool too). We’re talking broader. The self starter mentality. The ability to mobilize and tackle and problem when you find it.

However, more so than the “what” in your profile, MIT cares about the “how” and “why”. It’s great that you improved something X or implemented Y. But HOW? WHY? How did it make you feel? What did you learn from it? How did this experience help you grow and develop? Sloan values introspection so a cursory set of essays won’t cut it.

Students here also tend to be active. You can expect lots of involvement in yearlong contests through the MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition, with cash prizes for winning business plans. To wind down after a busy week students, faculty and staff meet weekly for Consumption Functions, better known as “C-Functions,” which often celebrate international cultures with food, music and dancing.

Lastly, Sloan is still a part of MIT. They like math. Even from a finance perspective, they have some great offerings on the more quant side. If you’re not good with numbers, you might be in for a bit of a challenge. The adcom is really going to look through your application to make sure you’ll be able to survive there. Your GMAT, GPA, and demonstrated quant abilities will be important here!

Sloan uses a variety of tools to help shape your MBA journey from lectures and cases to projects and labs. Your first semester is going to run you ragged as you hit the core classes but after that MIT puts control in your hands. Outside of the first semester’s core classes, there are no required courses for graduation. You can create your own path or select from some of the more common ways (e.g. Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Finance, and Sustainability).

In addition to classes, MIT offers two really cool opportunities. Sloan Innovation Period (SIP) is a week-long break midway through the semester to expose you to a variety of new topics and subjects. January’s Independent Activities Period (IAP) is a month long break in which you can literally do almost anything you’d like. Take an externship. Start a business. Take a trip! Seriously, almost anything.

Lastly, MIT’s action learning framework is a great way for students to take what they’re learning in the class and apply it to the real world. If you apply to Sloan, it might be a good idea to talk about how awesome this part of their curriculum is.

Joint Degrees

In addition to a great program with the Harvard Kennedy School, MIT Sloan also gives you some more unique options. If you’re interested in engineering and operations, this is the place for you. Make sure you check out their LGO (Leaders for Global Operations) and SDM (Systems Design Management)!

Other Special Programs

Sloan offers a lot of cool programs that can really help you put together a unique MBA experience. From local and global lab courses to externships with MIT alumni during the IAP to programs with the broader university, there’s no shortage of opportunities! Want to enter one of the best business plan competitions in the world? Well MIT is probably the place to do it. In its 23 year history it has launched 160 companies with $770M in funding and $2.5B in exits. If there’s one thing you should probably not miss while at MIT, it’s this!

Classes & Professors of Note

A contender for the cornerstone of the Sloan MBA experience, lab classes take what you learn in the classroom and apply it to the real world. Students can choose from a variety of topics including Global Entrepreneurship, Leadership, Sustainability, and Innovation. Groups of 4 students spend 4 months on a consulting engagement for a real program and can spend time on site during IAP. G-Lab and China Lab are favorites!

Professor Forbes’ resume outside of MIT Sloan is one of the things that makes her such a great professor. She teaches Applied Macro & International Economics and oh boy has she applied it. She’s been a member of the Council of Economic Advisers at the White House and been the Deputy Assistant Secretary at the US Treasury. She was also at the World Bank and Morgan Stanley. Whew! She’s recently launched a course titled Global Economic Challenges and there’s a lot of buzz about it!

When we say he’s one of the most engaging professors at Sloan, we’re not the only ones thinking it. He’s been given the MIT Sloan Student award more than 10 times! He understands everything finance and year after year, his course gathers a lot of well-deserved attention and buzz!
