UT Tyler Accepting Applications for Archer Fellowship Program

The University of Texas at Tyler is currently accepting student applications for Washington, D.C. internships through the Bill Archer Fellowship Program, Dr. Michael Eidenmuller, associate professor of speech communication and Archer Center campus coordinator, announced.

Applicants must be UT Tyler juniors or seniors with 24 completed hours at UT Tyler, have an overall 3.0 GPA, complete basic government requirements and hold work or internship experience. Applications may be picked up from Ashley Ward, UT Tyler academic adviser in University Center, room 219B. Deadline is Friday, Feb. 15.

The UT System established the Bill Archer Fellowship in 2001 in conjunction with Former U.S. Representative Bill Archer.

Each student will intern full-time, take one weekend class and two evening classes taught by UT professors and live near Capitol Hill and the Supreme Court with other interns from UT System campuses.

Students pay for a program fee as well as the cost of books. In addition, living and work costs are out-of-pocket.

Finalists will be notified by Friday, Feb. 29, and students selected to participate in the program will be notified by Friday, April 4.

Here are some details you may want to know about CAP at UT Tyler:


If you attend UT Tyler through CAP, you are not eligible to be considered for scholarships.

Students who have completed fewer than 60 credit hours at any junior college or university are required to live on campus at UT Tyler (if facilities are available).

More Information Residence Halls

UT Tyler is home to more than 1,400 resident students. Students who are required to live on campus may reside in Ornelas Hall. Patriot Village. University Pines or Eagle’s Landing. Located on campus, all four housing facilities are only a few minutes’ walk from your classes, the library. the student center and recreational facilities. Each housing facility is designed especially with UT Tyler students in mind and offers first-class living arrangements.

Housing Application

Even if you applied for on-campus housing at UT Austin, you must apply for housing at UT Tyler by completing the General Housing Application. Any deposits paid to UT Austin are not transferable to UT Tyler.

There is no deadline for submitting the General Housing Application, but some floor plans fill quickly, so apply as soon as possible in order to secure your housing preference.

Exceptions to Requirement

Exceptions to the on-campus housing requirement may be made for students who meet the approved waiver requirement(s). A waiver request form may be obtained from the Residence Life Office.

A waiver will be granted if you meet any one of the following conditions:

  • Live within 50 miles of Tyler with a parent or legal guardian
  • Are married
  • Are 21 or over or will be before the 12th class day
  • Have a medical disability that cannot be accommodated on campus
  • Have custody of a child and can provide the Housing Department with an original birth certificate of the child or custody documentation
  • Are enrolled for eight or fewer semester credit hours during the fall and/or spring semesters

Students who meet one of the exemptions listed above and who wish to live off campus must submit a request for a waiver to the policy in writing to the Residence Life Office. The Residence Life Office must approve the waiver, even if it is a waiver for which the student automatically qualifies.

CAP students attending UT Tyler—like all other students in Texas—must complete the Texas Success Initiative requirement.

More Information TSI Assessment

The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requires that undergraduate students entering Texas public institutions of higher education be assessed for readiness to enroll in freshman-level academic coursework. Although some students will be exempt, others will be required to take the TSI Assessment.

If you are TSI exempt based on ACT, SAT or TAKS scores, those scores must be submitted to UT Tyler’s Office of Admissions.

If you are deficient in any area of TSI, you will be required to enroll in developmental coursework in the area of deficiency during your freshman year at UT Tyler. Developmental courses will not count toward the 30 credit hours that are required to successfully complete CAP.

Math Policy

Placement in a math course during your freshman year is based on SAT, ACT, TSI or local test scores taken prior to entering UT Tyler. Students wishing to enroll in MATH 2413 (Calculus I) must meet at least one of the following prerequisites:

  • A grade of C or better in trigonometry (MATH 1316 or equivalent) or in a mathematics department-approved pre-calculus course (MATH 2312 or equivalent).
  • A score of 675 or higher on the SAT math section or 27 or higher on the ACT math test.
  • A passing score on a trigonometry placement test administered by UT Tyler’s Academic Advising Center.

Application processing fee

If you select UT Tyler when completing your online CAP agreement, you’ll be required to pay a $40 application processing fee to UT Tyler by April 15.

More Information

The $40 application processing fee is for UT Tyler’s processing of the CAP agreement. If you applied to UT Tyler previously and are now submitting the CAP agreement, you are still required to pay the non-refundable fee.

After you submit your online CAP agreement, UT Austin will forward your information to UT Tyler. Once UT Tyler receives your information, we will communicate with you via email using the address you provided on your ApplyTexas application. The email will include information concerning your UT Tyler Student ID. It will provide you access to your myUTTyler account and your Patriot email account, which will then allow you to pay your application processing fee online using a credit or debit card. Please allow ample time for the information to be loaded into our system and for the email to be sent. (This can take 5-7 business days from the date you submit your CAP agreement to UT Austin.)

UT Tyler will accept the application fee payment through the close of business (5 p.m.) on April 15.
